I'd bet that the Pieman character came first, and the Old Lamplighter was added after the chain added motels. It's odd to think that they were once restaurants only; in my childhood the two were inseperable. But it wasn't always so. Tthey had to trust that people would transfer good will from the existing product to the new one.

And they did.
