Alweg was a prime mover in the "straddle-beam monorail" market. They made a bid to build a system in LA, and run it themselves, but the city turned it down. The conspiracists believe Big Oil was behind it. Possibly the city just didn't want it.

It would have been cool, but cities do not always benefit from trains lofted high above the street. It might have looked dated and wheezy by the 90s, assuming it had lasted that long.
