This selfishness came as a complete surprise to her, of course.
The actual story isn’t too far off from the cover. These two used to go together, but she fell in love with his best friend, and married him. Both guys went off to ‘Nam, and served together until the guy who married the blonde was shot by Charlie. With me so far? Well, the guy who’d been dumped romances the young widow after he’s back in the world, and she re-falls in love with him and marries him. But it’s rocky, because the baby cries like ALL THE TIME, and he can’t get any action. Desperate to carve out some private space, he stakes it all on a picnic where he’ll put forth the one brilliant idea that might save their marriage: BOWLING.
She chooses the baby over bowling, so he walks around for a while until it rains, and then he goes home, and the baby is scared of thunder, and he holds the baby and says “daddy’s here.” Because he’s made his peace with it now. And the wife cries. Which means it's a happy ending. It's not a happy ending if someone's eyes aren't geysering out white, glistening fluid, and no one's wasting money on bowling. Not when you could use that money for the baby's room.
It needs wallpaper. Something cute with ducks. |
