The dog was taught to play the drum because some days no other children came over to visit. The poor kids like to come over but sometimes they were down with rickets or the runs from the bad water that ran by their house; the middle-class kids stopped coming of their own volition when it became apparent that every visit left them unhappy with their own condition.

Richie suspected this sometimes; the drums helped drive the thoughts out of his mind.
