The architect for many of these beauties was Wayne McAllister.
This LA Times story notes, in sorrow:
. . . of all the McAllister designs that are now razed, Nichols wishes that just one of his drive-ins -- McDonnell's, maybe, or Simon's -- could have survived. "They were almost ephemeral," says Nichols, "made out of light and air."
McAllister died in 2000, right on the cusp of the century people thought his work anticipated.
