A geneology page for Charles Gustaf Vanstrum says he was a "trader on frontier / owned dept.store Mpls.." Also says he died in 1907, and notes "Liked woodworking. Very precise.." More so than the person who added two periods to everything.

CG's first store was the IXL Clothing Store, opened in Bridge Square in 1876. His sons opened this store.
