The asterisk goes to a trademark notice, which is odd; why not just use TM?

The particular pickle flavor was copywrited by Cora and Omar Fanning. The story says they were poor, and "Mrs. Fanning worked out an agreement with a local grocer, who gave her groceries -- including bread 'n butter -- in exchange for the pickles. The name stuck."

How does the name stick? Who makes a point of broadcasting their poverty?

At some point they lost the trademark. Anyone can call their product Bread and Butter these days.
