Leila Hyams started in the silents, and had some notable speaking roles, including the “wise-cracking but kind-hearted circus performer” in “Freaks.” She was the original choice to play Jane in “Tarzan,” but turned it down. Who knows why. She retired from movies in ’36, just a few years after she appeared in this book.

Some people in old movies stand out because they don’t seem to be acting at all. Case in point, on the left.
