Would you rather be the glamorous movie star, or the banal versifier?
Faith Baldwin wrote the doggerel in praise of Marg Daw. At the time Faith was still a decade or so away from her big paydays - by the 30s she'd be making the equivalent of $4 million a year. She kept it up until she died in 1978, and published over 100 books.
The NYT said her books"were popular because they 'enabled lonely working people, young and old, to identify with her glamorous and wealthy characters.'"
Marjorie Daw died a year later, in 1979 - but her career had been kaput for half a century since sound ruined everything;
