In 1937, New York City parks commissioner Robert Moses published a report about the possible redevelopment of Coney Island, as well as the Rockaway and the South Beach of Staten Island. Moses wrote of Coney Island, "There is no use bemoaning the end of the old Coney Island fabled in song and story. The important thing is not to proceed in the mistaken belief that it can be revived."

He further wrote that the boardwalk should be redeveloped, and that old buildings should be demolished to make way for parking facilities.

Well, Moses gotta Moses, as they say. But there's more to it than that.
