I wrote this many years ago, and posted it periodically over the years. But I never went back and gave it a second look. Turns out there was more to the story than I thought, so I added a new ending, and added one detail missing from “Carol” - the two men who come around asking for a donation for charity. In this case they’re Damon Runyon hoods.
