I guess you're supposed to imagine yourself in this place with the right people. Or just alone, if you're like that. As good as the furniture looks, it was probably uncomfortable for extended periods - those cushions slid out from under you, made it hard to get up - and the chairs didn't encourage a comfortable slump.

Bravo to the photographer for getting the angle just right: you see the mirrors and the reflection the "upper level," giving it the illusion of much more depth than it had.
