The roof garden. No one seems to be having a particularly good time, but that was the Serious art of the era; the popular press would have everyone laughing in gay old style. Still: the fellow seems to be demonstrating Casual Mesmerism, and the young lady to his left wishes he’d mesmerize her some night. There’s a band in the corner oompahing away. On a summer night, it must have been a magnificent place.
