Ahhh. There. That’s a city.

The Gopher opened in 1938 in the bones of the old Grand, adorned in the colors of the University of Minnesota. Not too big, but plush and comfy. According to “Show Houses Twin City Style” by Kirk Besse, it featured a variety of modern contrivances, such as a water fountain you could operate with your feet. Drink with your hands full, the Modern Way!

When I came to Minneapolis, the Gopher was a nasty old porn house on the porniest block downtown. It was knocked down for City Center.
