You just know that carpet was as hard as concrete. It probably was some kind of specially woven carpet. The place has a certain Derek-Flint charm, what with the combination bed-nightstand-sofa unit.

It's a dull ordinary thing now, remodeled in the puffy ersatz "classical" style of modern motels.
