Why he's draped with paper from the teletypes, I've no idea. It indicates the level of activity the job requred, I guess. Why, the phone jumped off the hook with requests. Meanwhile, teletype paper shot aroud his neck as if it had a life of its own, forcing him to fight it off with a small mallet.
See the object in his right hand? Do you have any doubt that studios had a small xylophone for effects, such as sounding out the call sign? Of course they did - and I never thought about it until I saw the mallet.
Of course, the NBC network had one. But it was taped.
