From the company's website:

Conrad M. Gentry and Don F. Kenworthy founded Mayflower Transit Co. in Indianapolis, Ind., in 1927 as an alternative to railroads for customers who were interested in moving their belongings across the country on the expanding network of paved roads.

"Dear, they're making great strides in tying America's cities together with paved roads. What do you say we move our belongings out on this network?"

"What do you mean, move to another city?"

"No! I mean we just put them in a truck and have someone drive them around."

"Sounds terribly modern and madcap! Let's do it."
