Unlikely as it may seem, Du-par’s has a website. Not only are the restaurants still around – well, the Farmhouse, anyway – but it turns out they have a rich pedigree you can’t guess from the name. According to the site, Du-par’s was founded by Tiny Naylor, a man whose name is synonymous with LA Googie coffee shops. His son still runs the joint. Where the name comes from, I don’t know; usually you look for the names of the kids mushed into one strange word, biut the Naylor kids were named Biff, Chet, and Greg. (I would have named the place Bifchetreg’s, myself.) In any case, Du-par’s came along before the kids, so it can’t be that.
Thanks, Tiny.
