For decades in the middle of the 20th century, Ott’s Drive-in near Fisherman’s Wharf was known for two things: its enormous 250-space parking lot and getting robbed on a regular basis.
But for a brief yet electric moment, the drive-in at 550 Bay St. became a high-tech pioneer in food service. On May 22, 1967, Ott’s became the first fast-food spot in San Francisco, after installing the only automated ordering system in the Bay Area.
