How can that possibly be? How can a burro outrun TOPPER? And why does Hopalong's horse share the name with a character in movies who sees amusing, quasi-alcoholic ghosts?

More to the point: why does Hopalong feel compelled to tell this to his horse, who does not understand his apology whatsoever?
