All the gardens died that year, but it doesn't matter. They bought some more. Richie learned an important lesson, though: living things cannot thrive if all they have for sustenance is a shower of gems, precious metals, and paper currency. Money is not life.
He also learned, again, that the compound's plumbing system was seriously screwed up. At least it explained the six feet of standing water in the Rare Books vault.
