This utterly mirthless rag was an obvious copy of Li’l Abner, hoping to tap into America’s boundless love of rural folk who lived in shacks perched on hills and drank from jugs marked with several Xs. In this case, “zaniest” meant a cross-eyed tongue-biter with a furry large intestine dangling from his cap.  The genre would culminate in “The Beverly Hillbillies,” of course – as well as Mountain Dew soda, which originally featured “hillfolk” on the label.
