The First National, seen here shortly after completion. It was the first big 20th century building, but it was never quite as impressive as it wanted to be. It’s sober; it’s grave; the mechanical housing on the roof looks like a super-strength vault. If it had been a bit wider, or taller, it would have been a landmark, but it spent all its space on length.
