Something happened. Let's call it "The 20th Century." This view looks west, and shows the rather complete overhaul of the street.

Hard to say it's an improvement; difficult to say it could have been prevented. A lot of this was just old and unsuited to modern uses - at least as they were construed at the time, so they had to go.

Or they burned. Combustion is a constant friend to the champion of the New.

The spires adorned the Metropole Hotel, wrecked in '61; the building hugging the right side of the picture was hte Webster. The Fargo History page said it went down in 1981, which surprised me; I had no memory of it, and I should have. But: this page has a picture from 1967, and that helped: White House Hamburgers I do recall.

Never ate one, though. We didn't go down to NP avenue.
