Around noon I finished the pressure washing and decided to do a segment of the lawn. There were about six tablespoons of gas left. If all went well I would finish the north hill without running out and leaving a stripe of shame. And I did! But now I need to refill to do the main hill, and that means judicious refilling, so I don’t find myself standing in the driveway, the mower running with a bungie cord wrapped around the dead-man’s switch.

But what a boon, to be mowing on the second of October! Eighty degrees! What was it last year? Googling . . . oh. Eighty. Well, what was it in 2023?

Eighty nine

Hold on, hold on - have I consistently misunderstood this time of year? No. It’s usually about 48 - 58. Well, best take advantage of this mowing lull to get a haircut and return the shop-vac to the Giant Swede.

LATER It finally struck me what this reminded me of:

A Minion Dalek.

Now, the last batch. Yes, I was clip-happy. You could say clip-conscious.

They loved to draw ships like this.

It’s short and it’s colorized. After a minute we get a great Moderne set:

British actress with an interesting career, including the Obligatory Scandal.

Um

Hold on, it’s Pete Smith. He did a lot of short comedies. But this one appears to be serious. Available on YouTube, if you're curious.

What is this? The precursor of Loss?

I actually recognized the one on the upper left from another ad. It’s Alice Faye . . . Petty Style.

The rest are abstractions.

I always found her wholesome and charming, but that wasn’t her. She didn’t like the persona. From the bio:

Anne Frank was a fan of Durbin, and pasted two photos of her on the wall in the family's hideout; the photos are still on the wall today.

They didn’t even have to tell you what the movie was. In fact, there’s no movie on imdb that meets these criteria.

  A musical comedy.

I love the opening credits.

Her full name: Danielle Yvonne Marie Antoinette Darrieux. One of the grand dames of French cinema, it seems.

I had to drive to England. I set off mid-morn, and was surprised to see there was a road that ran through Minneapolis that would take me to England: Highway 1. It wasn’t well-marked, but there was a big enough sign at the main intersection. I drove for a while until I stopped for lunch at a bar, and they were so happy to see me they gave me e me a bottle of Jameson’s whiskey to take to England. While I was having lunch I checked the route, still unsure how I could drive to England, and sure enough, there was an overland route. Took ten hours, though, and it went through vast empty expanses in Canada. I sighed and decided I’d better get going.

I made some sort of mess at the bar, but managed to clean it up, or at least hide it, before I left.

AI, asked to illustrate, demonstrated a multitude of misconceptions.

This is better, I suppose.
