  1. I’m first to post!!

    Ahem.

His fountain service has neapolitan ice cream. Two points for his establishment right there.

  2. Seattle Dave says:

    I miss soda fountains.

I remember hearing once that true Neapolitan ice cream can be made with any three flavors, but we think of it as chocolate/strawberry/vanilla because those were the three most popular flavors in the U.S. when it first became popular here.

  3. Nancy says:

I love the Zinnias. Just an odd thing to see in an ad for an ice cream place.

  4. Susan says:

    Welcome back, Mr. Lileks.

  5. bgbear says:

I lived near Cayucos as a young person but, only drove through once. The name seems to have the same origin as a kayak boat.

The very short phone number are always odd. I was once looking at some vintage local ads and it took me a long time to realize the three digit numbers in the ads were phone numbers.

    _@_v – laxatives!

btw… when there’s more than one page of comments why does the link to older comments say ‘newer entries’ and vice versey for the link to newer comments?

  7. Stone says:

The talk about iced treats and Nancy’s comment about Zinnias reminded me of something: anyone else know what a “Zemi” is? We had a machine just outside the gym doors at our High School. I’m getting flashbacks…

  8. ScottG says:

Shesnailie, James has been asked that question before, but has never responded to it. Maybe he doesn’t read the comments after all!!??!!

  9. Mr_Hat says:

Stone – I remember the Zemi. Last time I had one was probably about 1979. Do you remember there was a “mystery” flavor called Z-7?

  10. Di says:

    Zeppoli aren’t bad, either.

I think that’s the prettiest matchbook yet – well, the back cover.

  11. HunkybobTX says:

Brought up the Google street map for Cayucos. Looks like a nice town. Too bad there’s no address for Mr. Pereira’s Motor lodge. Guess they didn’t need one back when the phone was only two digits.

  12. Petronius says:

That’s ice cream? I thought it was some blocks of foam rubber!
