“It’s going to take the right buyer.”

In his customary style, the great Jim the Realtor, our Virgil on our tour of the housing market,  understates the problem. Behold the Rock House:

I grew up near there. Funny, but I think the house on that hill has always been abandoned.

20 years ago, kids drove their crummy cars up to the top of that hill at night to make out or smoke or do whatever dumb things kids did. The house up there then was abandoned, too. The rumors were always that the owners had been drug dealers and the property had been seized by the feds, but no one ever knew; what other reason could there be for this most amazing piece of property in the whole north county to be empty with this massive house on it?

But then it stopped being safe to go up there–too many other people going up there to do nefarious things, no longer just teens being teens. I’m surprised there weren’t more interesting things he could have filmed going on at that place these days. I imagine it’s still quite the location for trouble.

    Jim the Realtor is great!

I had no idea… wow… I live two blocks south of the smokestack, but have only been here since 1985 and had not heard of this deserted house foundation.

So it must be in Escondido? Have to head to the website and take a look. Amazing to see this on the Bleat!

I’m surprised the neighbor hasn’t bought it. Seems like it would add at last a million to the value of his home to raze the monstrosity next door.

That property looks like an archeological dig. Remnants of a once-great civilization. Maybe it could be used as a set for a low-budget Biblical epic.

  6. Fantabulous says:

That’s most irritating thing I’ve ever seen.

Yes… it reminded me exactly of Maccu Piccu, except that tbese stones have a greater variety of color, and the hills aren’t as steep.

  8. I think I played that level in Halo once…

@Fantabulous “Irritating” is the perfect word to describe that mess. Reminds me of a war zone. Jeeze. What were they thinking?

  10. Normie says:

Reminds me of another eastern European guy who liked building with rock (okay, so it was coral rock, but still…)

Note the construction, rubble-filled rock walls (if I’m seeing that right, glimpses were too brief). Those walls will take a direct hit from some seriously bad artillery. Might even survive a medium-size earthquake. From what I could see — wish he had better views of the site and more on the technical aspects such as water, sewer and power — that would make a nice redoubt. Looks like good field of fire too. But then I tend to think of fortresses and sieges when I see breastwork like that. If that wasn’t so far from the spaceport I’d be tempted.

Jeff, have you been to Maccu Piccu? No mortar in the stonework there, all dry-laid with breathtaking precision. This thing has more concrete than a small dam. :-)

Yes, about 20 years ago. I wasn’t thinking about the method of construction particularly; the sheer amount of stonework and the excavation around the walls, and the sense of desolation, were what came to mind.

I’m guessing that here, at least, you don’t leave on a bus going down steep switchbacks to the train station… with little kids literally running straight down the mountain to wave at you every time your bus goes back and forth!

Reminds me of the maze walls of the early 90s version of Castle Wolfenstein!

Couldn’t see the picture at work, will have to wait until I get home, but that’s what I was thinking based on the descriptions of previous comments. I’ll bet if you “strafe” along those walls, a panel might open and reveal a secret room with more ammo, food, and/or treasure.

    Jeff,
Oh yeah, that bus ride. Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride was Sunday stroll in the park in comparison. I dam’ near kissed the ground when we arrived at the station. Were you there to view Comet Halley? We had a grandly spooky time at night in the ruins with a telescope and a stray white llama. But this is off topic.

  16. Droptma Styx says:

“I’d call that a million-dollar view … we’ll throw in the rocks for free.”

This is why we love Jim the Realtor.
