Picture of the Day | The Bleat.

011509sml1

When you start thinking in terms of distance, spread, opacity and angle, you’ve spent too much time in Photoshop.

Another shot from the post-war high school where my daughter has weekly piano lessons. Every week I find some surviving piece of the old Ike-era styles.

Holy Cow! How do the poor kids find their lockers? By touch?

Natalie should be glad she doesn’t have the piano teacher my sisters and I had as kids. She was a 60-something year old British lady. Her teeth went in all directions and had not been brushed since George was king. She loved to sit right next to you and sing “Hot Crossed Buns” right into your face as you tried to play and not keel over. We loved to hide around the corner and watch each sibling endure the ordeal.

Oddly, none of us learned piano. Go figure…

  2. I look at that picture and think: “Where’s the fire hose?”

  3. Tom says:

Is it a symbolic fire hose? Is it meant to be a metaphor for the burning need for children to learn? And by what means does it float 12 inches from the wall? Boggles the mind.

  4. Dora Standpipe says:

I have been looking for buildings that still have the “fallout shelter” signs in them. I noticed that the school #1 son goes to does not have them…but when I was a child and attended the same school…they were there. It seems that as places get updated, the fallout shelter signs disappear.

  5. Chaka says:

“Learn to stay away from those who carry ’round a fire hose.”

Sorry, I just hear Dylan in my head every time I see “Fire hose.”

  6. MikeH says:

Where’s ed fROMOHIO? (obscure music comment)

I initially misread the above as “the old Ikea-era styles,” and it surprised me, because, at least in my neck of the woods, Ikea appears to be doing quite nicely.

“I look at that picture and think: “Where’s the fire hose?””

That was my first thought too. In the stairways at the Children’s Clinic in Cleveland there are little nooks at the landings and behind the glass where the fire hoses used to sit are little signs saying “Removed by the order of the Cleveland Fire Marshal”. I just had to scratch my head and wonder why…

  9. Ross says:

Dora Standpipe? I think I may be in love…
“Dear, rich Dora Standpipe! HOW I LOVE HER(father’s money)!”
Easily one of the top ten things Chuck Jones ever did.
