Retweet Theater: Hamiflu | The Bleat.

Hard to use the robots for Abbott-and-Costello-style timing, as you’ll see.

I love the rim shot and the bird squawk. Flu’s on first… heh.

  2. roger h (bgbear) says:

There is a routine out there with Harry Shearer and David Lander where they use “The Who”, “The Guess Who”, and “Yes” in a riff on the “Who’s on First” routine.

Funny but, sexy square nurses are not to be found.

If it is a pandemic, shouldn’t the misanthrope environmentalist be partying like it is 1918?

  3. DaveInAz says:

    HA!

  4. GuyfromNH says:

Ah, Lileks… isn’t there *anything* he can’t do?

  5. justjack says:

yes, also loved the bird squawk. But shouldn’t that more correctly have been a cricket cricketing?

There was a summer replacement show back in the late 60′s or maybe it was the early seventies called “The Copycats,” and it starred all comics who also did impressions. John Byner was on that show, e.g. One of the bits that stuck in my mind all these years was a take off on Who’s On First that kept refraining on the phrase “yes, today.”

I also remember a guy doing Boris Karloff saying “antipasto.”

    “Auntee Pahssththththth-toe…”

BTW, James, have you been complimented yet on the way the guy does his air quotes gesture? That’s also a good’n.

  6. teach5 says:

Hamiflu and flu’s on first! I squealed with laughter!Oink.

  7. Andrew says:

    roger –

I remember from my foggy childhood that there was a similar skit on “The Animaniacs.” Wait…yes, here it is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39xNlnmNLf4

  8. TaiChiWawa says:

    Merrie Maladies?

  9. boblipton says:

No, crows are psychopomps, although given that our genial host is from the Midwest, whippoorwills might be a better choice.

And I see she’s dressed up as a nurse. Yes, I know, it’s because it’s about medicine, right? Hah! Can’t fool me! What next? Scuba gear for that latex look? Catholic school skirts and socks?

    Bob

  10. Tory Mitchell says:

“A few cities and a thousand news reports…” Precisely! And on an unrelated note, how many times were my comments to girls met with that gaze…the “I cannot believe this guy thinks he really should be talking to me” look. Ahhhh, youth! I hardly liked any of it! Stay well and happy, everyone. Tory Mitchell from the BEAUTIFUL Pacific Northwest.

  11. jenifersf says:

Ha, that was good. (I have been calling the news the flews lately).

  12. Mark says:

CLEARLY THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY WEEK

  13. boblipton says:

I’m sorry, Mark, but that’s pathetic.

    Bob

  14. Teresa says:

Inquiring minds want to know if she’s wearing the bikini under the nurse get-up. Then again maybe we don’t want to know. Too bad “hamiflu” couldn’t have been accompanied by the sound of bacon frying… but I like the crow.

  15. DaveInAz says:

Teresa, I like the Crow too… but I prefer the Servo.

  16. SZPT says:

    Best one yet!

  17. viggen says:

    Brilliant!

  18. Skellum says:

OK James, you own me on this one!

  19. Nancy says:

Perhaps the Swine flu is a result of the miasma that is wafting from Capitol Hill in the form of the “Pork-u-lus” Bill. It was carried to Mexico with the “undocumented immigrants” who are self-deporting in droves due to the economy. The reason Americans haven’t died yet is that we have been exposed to variations of it for years. People are sicker than ever this time because this strain is millions of times stronger than it has ever been in the past.

  20. Waldo says:

    BGBear –
    Yes!! (third act)
that WAS the classic riff, and exactly what I thought of first on seeing this.

  21. Dave (in MA) says:

Am I the only one who kept looking at the sky in that movie to see if Scare Force One flew past?

  22. MariaBee says:

    Timeless comedy.
Instead of a crow…maybe an owl? That would have been a (who)oot. (Please forgive me, I can’t help myself.)

  23. Lileks says:

The only bird I can use is a crow. Believe me, I’m doing the best I can with the tools at hand. ;) Can’t complain about free.

  24. Wallace says:

The nurse has only a two dimensional chest rather ruining this for me. Nurses ought to have three dimensions.

  25. cjbpeps says:

    Outstanding.
    Best.ReTweet.To.Date.

  26. Bill McNutt says:

Married to a nurse, I am in a position to give an objective report. Judging from a sample of one, nurses DO, in fact, have three dimensions.

And James, you were right about the timing.

  27. Jon says:

Well done. (which pork should always be)

  28. Grant says:

Keith Moon is very sad right now…

  29. Jerry Ray says:

I’m glad somebody else remembers that Animaniacs skit. :-)

  30. SullyAg says:

    Makin’ bacon!

I’ve decided the nurse’s name is Tammy Flue.

“Antipasto” for Karloff: That was a Rich Little staple for mid-1970s television talk shows. Carson, Griffin, Douglas, Dinah, he did ‘em all.

  31. Jose Pluma says:

    Mr. Lileks:

Please keep the nurse uniform. It’s a lot less disquieting than the bikini.

  32. Lileks says:

As long as the current crisis continues, she will be appropriately attired. Had to change it eventually.

  33. Davey says:

I just love those little robots :)

  34. Fred says:

I don’t know how you keep topping yourself week after week but that one had me chortling…
